P.S. After the expedition President Jefferson appointed me governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory. The job was a difficult one. I was a better explorer than a governor. I felt that I was not a success, and was accused by government officials of spending government money unwisely. I died in 1809 as I was traveling to Washington, D.C. to clear my name. Some people say I committed suicide, while others say my political enemies murdered me. What do you think?
