Description of call: sound of a thumb running along a plastic comb
boreal chorus frog
Pseudacris triseriata maculata
The chorus frog has been a recorded from Isle Royale within the last 45 years
, but it may have been overlooked before. Its voice, and ascending "preep " is commonly heard in the spring from semi permanent rock pools around the shore, and less often from inland bogs and swamps. These Chorus Frogs, like other members of the genus Pseudacris, are small frogs with a loud voice. Their maximum snout-vent length is about 1.5 inches long.
Park Status Present in Park
See Pseudacris triseriata (no subspecies designation). Harding and Holman (1992) indicate that the subspecies of the chorus frog found on ISRO is Pseudacris triseriata maculata, a subspecies of the western chorus frog. Abundance Unknown
Ranger tip: Their call is easily mistaken for that of a larger frog. The frog is difficult to locate, even when calling, because of its habit of hiding in cracks or burrowing into moss or grass tussocks. Most of the Tadpoles found in rock pools are probably of this species. Residency Breeder
