The Iņupiat
Heritage Center is a spacious new facility designed to handle
multiple functions. There are several problems that currently
need be corrected to enhance the use of the facility for the general
public.
The
theme of the exhibit room is "Agviq, The Bowhead Whale."
Qargi - Storytelling Place
Place
for elders to tell stories. Also features Arctic Leaders, a photo
exhibit of prominent Iņupiat leaders who contributed to the Iņupiat
Community. Quotes and brief biographies accompany most of the
photographs. One of the most important ones is Eben Hopson, a
whaler and highly regarded leader who eventually became the first mayor
of the North Slope Borough. His efforts from within State government
helped create the atmosphere necessary to win acceptance for the new
Borough. Hopson died in 1979 at age 57.
