The Great Lakes Research and Education Center (GLREC) is part of a network of research learning centers established by the NPS since 2000. The role of the Research Learning Centers are to promote better research in National Parks and adjacent lands to improve natural resource management and educate the pubic about park research. The centers promote outreach and education of the public by including citizens in monitoring and research activities. A new field station has been developed at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. This facility has laboratory equipment and office space for scientists interested in pursuing resource management research and monitoring in the network parks.
