Visitor Center Volunteer

Description of Duties: Volunteers are responsible for staffing the visitor center, greeting visitor operating a cash register and providing information about early 1800's United States history to include the War of 1812, the Creek Indian War and the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Volunteers should have knowledge of local area and the National Park Service in order to answer visitor questions. Volunteers may present informal programs to park visitors. Provide living history black powder demonstrations. Volunteers may open and close the Visitor Center. Perform routine wayside exhibit maintenance and conduct roving interpretation on the battlefield depending on level of visitation. Volunteers participate in other interpretive activities as needed.

  • Provide efficient and courteous service to the park visitor.
  • Add to the visitor's understanding of the significance of Horseshoe Bend and the Creek War in United States history.
  • Promote an appreciation of the National Park Service and its mission.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Experience Desired:
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with people of diverse cultures.
  • Knowledge of, or willing to learn about, the local area and resources.
  • Knowledge of retail sales and ability to operate a cash register.
  • Knowledge of early 1800's frontier history.

Special Requirements: Volunteers spend a major portion of work time standing and may be asked to drive a government-owned vehicle. Volunteers will wear a volunteer uniform furnished by the park. Work schedules will be determined based on the needs of the park and the availability of volunteers.
