UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR NATIONAL PARK SERVICE Hampton National Historic Site Superintendent’s Compendium of designations, closures, permit requirements and other restrictions required under Title 36 Code of Federal Regulation § 1.7(b)
Under the provisions of Title 16 United States Code, Section 3, and Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 1, the following designations, closures, permit requirements and other restrictions imposed under the discretionary authority of the Superintendent are established for Hampton National Site. They will go into effect on May 1, 2003, and will supersede the previous compendium at that time. Unless otherwise noted, these apply in addition to the provisions contained in parts 1-7 of Title 36 CFR. 36 CFR PART 1 - GENERAL PROVISIONS 1.5 Closures and public use limits The park is closed to the public from 17:00 hours until 08:00 hours
daily. The park will be closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. All buildings within the park are closed to public use except for regularly scheduled and conducted activities or as allowed by a permit. Eating, drinking, chewing gum, and the use of smokeless tobacco products
are prohibited in all buildings with the following exceptions:
The park is closed to recreational and sporting activities that potentially detract from the historic setting of the park, result in conflict among visitor use activities, or threaten natural or cultural resources. Prohibited activities include but are not limited to the following: racing, skating (including in-line skating), skateboarding, rock climbing, ball playing, kite flying, model airplane flying, frisbee throwing, organized team sports such as baseball, softball, soccer, et cetera, golf playing, horseshoes, lawn darts, volleyball, badminton or similar net games. Prohibited activities do not include walking, hiking, strolling, jogging, and bicycling. (See 4.30, Bicycles for more information.) Specific prohibitions on certain activities may be addressed in other regulations. 1.6 Permits Activities requiring a permit that may be issued by the Park Superintendent are listed below:
36 CFR PART 2 - RESOURCE PROTECTION, PUBLIC USE AND RECREATION 2.1 Preservation of natural, cultural and archeological resources. Dead or downed wood may not be collected in the park. The gathering and removal of certain fruits, berries and nuts by hand for personal use and consumption is permitted in Hampton National Historic Site. One peck per person per day of edible nuts may be gathered. Leaves and pinecones may be collected from the ground for educational purposes. No live flowers, live leaves, or other plant parts may be collected, except as allowed by permit issued by the Superintendent.
2.2 Wildlife protection. The use of artificial light for the purpose of viewing wildlife is prohibited throughout the park. 2.10 Camping and food storage. Camping is not allowed in Hampton NHS
The following areas are closed to picnicking:
2.13 Fires. Fires or open flames are not allowed, except within the curtilage of a park residence by the resident. Campfires will be permitted only in connection with a Special Use Permit. 2.15 Pets. The inside of any building (park residences excepted) is closed to the possession of pets (Guide and Service dogs are excepted). All pets must be crated, caged, or restrained on a leash not more than six feet long. In picnic areas pets may be tied to picnic tables or tethered in the area while the owner / handler is present, but will not be left unattended. All pet excrement must be immediately collected and disposed of in refuse containers by the pet owner. Park residents may keep pets provided the resident can provide proof of valid registration and vaccinations in accordance with state and local regulations. 2.16 Horses and pack animals. Horseback riding and pack animals are not permitted except with a permit issued by the Superintendent. 2.18 Snowmobiles.
2.19 Winter activities. Sledding and other forms of winter recreational activities are prohibited in the formal gardens. 2.20 Skating, skateboards, and similar devices. Park residents and their guests may use roller skates, skateboards, or similar devices, but only within the curtilage of a park residence. 2.21 Smoking.
2.23 Recreation fees.
2.35 Alcoholic beverages and controlled substances. All areas of Hampton National Historic Site, are closed to the consumption
of alcoholic beverages or the possession of an open container of an alcoholic
beverage with the following exceptions
2.51 Public Assemblies, meetings. AND Both of these activities require a permit from the Superintendent. These activities are permitted in the roughly circular area bounded on all sides by the entrance road that links the two parking lots. This area is marked on a map at the end of this compendium. 36 CFR PART 4 - VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC SAFETY 4.21 Speed limits.
4.30 Bicycles. Bicycles are permitted on the paved and gravel roadways within the park. Grassy areas, gardens, meadows, et cetera are closed to bicycles. Bicycles may be operated in a careful and prudent manner in opposition to the one-way direction of traffic on one-way park roads.
36 CFR PART 5 - COMMERCIAL AND PRIVATE OPERATIONS 5.6 Commercial vehicles. Commercial vehicles are not allowed in the park, unless they are conducting business with the National Park Service or a cooperator of the National Park Service, or a park resident.
This certifies that the compendium for Hampton National Historic Site was reviewed and is hereby implemented.
