Haleakala is considered an active volcano and is monitored remotely through equipment which sends information to the Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory on the Island of Hawaii.

This volcanic research center, located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, has a ring-side seat to observe Kilauea Volcano, the youngest volcano in the island chain and the only one currently erupting.
