Well Drilling

These pages illustrate some basic stages of drilling and well design.  Wells may be designed to withdraw (or pump) water from aquifers for drinking water or irrigation.  Wells can also be used to inject water into aquifers to recharge or fill them back up.  Many different types of groundwater wells may be constructed depending on specific goals or needs.  For example, a domestic well that is commonly used to supply water for homes will be constructed differently than a production well that is used to supply drinking water to municipalities (cities).

Another use for wells is to monitor groundwater levels to asses aquifer conditions such as water levels rising or falling, collecting water samples for water quality analysis or simply to identify that there is an aquifer present.  Hagerman Fossil Beds NM has installed groundwater monitoring wells to collect data on aquifers.  Below are links to images and information on a basic monitor well installation that occurred at Hagerman Fossil Beds NM in 1994.
