Groundwater

This color infrared air photo shows active vegetation growth as red/orange tones.  The dark blue color is due to cold water bodies such as the Snake River in the lower right hand corner.  Check out the other pages at this site for more info on how groundwater and surface water are causing the red/orange patterns.

Perched groundwater discharges out of the hillsides causing excessive erosion, non-native invasive plant species and landslides that impact fossil resources.

Perched groundwater is groundwater that is perched higher in elevation than the regional aquifer.  In this case the regional aquifer is about 400 feet lower in elevation than the perched aquifers.  The regional aquifer is at an elevation of about 2800 feet while the perched groundwater systems are about 3200 feet.
