Housing at Harpers Ferry

Dormitory-style rooms are located in the Marmion Row building in the Lower Town (National Park Service photo).

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers in the states of West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, John Brown, Stonewall Jackson, and Frederick Douglass are just a few of the prominent individuals who left their mark on this place.

Occupying government housing is a privilege and must be treated as such. All of the buildings are located within a National Park are on the National Register of Historic Places. Park housing is shared occupancy, very similar to a dorm situation. Therefore, respect is of the utmost importance—respect for the events that transpired in historic Harpers Ferry, respect for the resources and surroundings, respect for your dorm mates and their privacy, respect for our Park neighbors, and respect for the visitor experience.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Each bedroom contains two beds, 2 dressers, closet space, and a shared desk.
  • Common areas include a sitting room, a kitchen with range, microwave and refrigerator, a dining area, and laundry room with washer and dryer.
  • There is only one full bathroom.
  • Bring linens and towels, eating utensils, dishes, cookware, etc.
  • Phone service is not furnished. Some, but not all, cell phone providers have service in the area.
  • Occupants are permitted to bring a television and purchase cable television service.
  • Mail is not delivered to the housing units. Occupants have the option of leasing a post office box from the local post office or working out an arrangement with their supervisor.
  • Pets and overnight visitors are not permitted.

Harpers Ferry is small and quaint, and does not offer the same amenities found in a city. Charles Town is the nearest town and is within five miles commuting distance. There you will find restaurants ranging from fast food to fine dining, hotels, grocery stores, and Wal-Mart. Outdoor activities are popular in the area, such as caving, rappelling, hiking, kayaking, whitewater rafting, biking, etc. Shepherdstown, a nearby college town, offers a movie house, restaurants, shopping, art shows and musical concerts.
