About Harpers Ferry ![]() View of Lower Town Harpers Ferry from Maryland Heights (National Park Service photo). Harpers Ferry is small and quaint, and does not offer the same amenities found in a city. Most of the shops and cafes in the Lower Town area close up at 5:00 p.m. each day. There is one 7-11 convenience store in the neighboring community of Bolivar, about a mile away from park housing in Lower Town, and a couple of motels with restaurants and occasional entertainment. Charles Town is the nearest city and is within five miles commuting distance. There you will find restaurants ranging from fast food to fine dining, motels, department stores, and grocery stores. Outdoor activities are popular in the area, such as biking, canoeing, caving, hiking, kayaking, rappelling, whitewater rafting, etc. Shepherdstown, a nearby college town, offers a movie house, restaurants, shopping, art shows, and musical concerts. Harpers Ferry is adjacent to the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. |
