FORT NECESSITY
Description: On July 3, 1754, in the wilderness of the Allegheny
Mountains, Colonial troops commanded by 22 year old Colonel George
Washington were defeated in this small stockade. This battle at
the "Great Meadows" was the opening battle of the French
and Indian War, a ten-year struggle between Great Britain and France
for control of North America.
Fort Necessity was situated alongside the main travel route between
Fort Cumberland and the Ohio River near the present town of Farmington,
Pa. This route was known successively as the Nemacolin Indian trail,
Braddock's Road, the National or Cumberland Road, and U.S. Route
40.
