JEFFERSON ROCK
Description: Jefferson Rock, July 31, 1890, from a tourist
photograph. Thomas Jefferson was personally familiar with Harpers
Ferry, having traveled to the site on October 25, 1783. Jefferson
stood on this very rock and subsequently penned a memorable description
of the view in his "Notes on the State of Virginia." His
remarks conclude with the emphatic declaration: "This scene
is worth a voyage across the Atlantic."
