THE EXPERIMENT

Description: Park Ranger Eric Johnson stands next to a reproduction of "The Experiment", the experimental iron boat frame which Meriwether Lewis had constructed at the Harpers Ferry Armory. Johnson, a blacksmith from Kearneysville, West Virginia, produced this replica by following Captain Lewis' "Dimentions" as noted in his letter to President Jefferson on April 20, 1803. Johnson also had the guidance of plans written by historian and "Experiment" expert, Michael Maggelet of Great Falls, Montana.
