LAVALE TOLL HOUSE
Description: The LaVale Toll House was built circa 1836
by the Federal government, prior to the road being taken over by
the individual states through which it passed. Tolls were collected
here until the late 19th century. Maryland’s sole remaining
toll house on the federally funded National Road has been restored
true to its original character, and surrounded by a small county
park. Two iron gateposts thirteen miles west of Cumberland mark
the spot where an additional toll house once stood.
