WESTERN MARYLAND RAILROAD STATION
Description: Located on Canal Street in Cumberland, the
Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Station houses the C&O Canal
Visitor Center operated by the National Park Service on the lower
floor. The railroad operates regularly scheduled steam and diesel-powered
trips over 16 miles between Cumberland and Frostburg. The railroad
is within easy walking distance of the origin point, or “Mile
0,” of the original Cumberland Road, which later became known
as the National Road. To the northwest, “The Narrows”
provides a scenic pass through the Alleghany Mountains. Both the
Historic National Road and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad
squeeze through the Narrows side by side.
