2001 Peregrine Falcon Movement

A total of five young peregrine falcons (3 female and 2 male) were released from hack boxes on Maryland Heights on Monday, June 18, 2001. The two falcons that that we tracked via satellite technology are female and came to us on June 8 from the Hart-Miller Lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay. Leg band identification letters (B/A and B/B) were used to identify the two falcons. The remains of Falcon B/B were found on August 6 on a farm west of Taneytown, Maryland. Based on the location of the remains, we suspect that she hit a low, thin powerline while attempting to capture a pigeon. We were able to retrieve the transmitter which we will use next year. Falcon B/A had migrated to Miami, Florida in November 2001 when her transmitter failed. [Learn more about satellite tracking].
