PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON, ACCOMPANIED BY VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE and National Park Service Director Robert Stanton, concluded Earth Day 1998 celebrations at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park by urging Congress to release funds designated for national parks and other public lands. Clinton and Gore visited the park on April 22, 1998, joining volunteers for trail maintenance activities along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The President also called for nearly $1 billion in spending over the next five years to repair and maintain national parks. [Read the President's Earth Day 1998 remarks].
