The George Washington Memorial Parkway starting May 30, 2003 will begin a construction project on the Clara Barton Parkway in Montgomery County, Maryland to resurface two sections of the parkway. The first section is between Glen Echo and Chain Bridge and the second section is between I-495 and MacArthur Boulevard.
Work will include milling and resurfacing of the two sections with severely deteriorated sections of the roadway being rehabilitated. Work is currently scheduled for weekends to minimize impacts to the traveling public. Sections of the parkway will be closed each weekend, except for the Fourth of July weekend, starting Friday night May 30, 2003. The parkway will close at 8pm each Friday night with the contractor required to have all milled surfaces paved and reopened to traffic no later than 5am Monday morning. Initial closures will begin with the south end of the parkway between Glen Echo and Chain Bridge. No traffic will be allowed in this section on weekends once work begins. Upon completion of work on this section, the work zone will shift to the north section between I-495 and MacArthur Boulevard. While working in north section, the contractor is required to maintain public access to the Carderock Picnic Area of the C&O Canal National Historical Park and the Navel Surface Warfare Center. Under the initial schedule, this will require visitors to access from one direction only and exit in the same direction. Advance message signs will be in place during the entire construction period to notify the public of the closures. During the weekend closures the public is encouraged to use either the Virginia George Washington Memorial Parkway or MacArthur Boulevard.
The work is being performed under a contract administered for the park by the Federal Highway Administration. The Contractor for this project is Lane Construction Corporation of Meriden, Connecticut. Lane Construction has performed other work along the parkway with excellent results. The amount of the contract is approximately $1,000,000.
Variations in weather may require adjustments to the schedule. The media will continue to be informed of any adjustments in the work schedule. Every effort is being made to minimize traffic delays and accomplish the work. The final completion date for all work is August 12, 2003. |
