Attached is a copy of the Mount Vernon Multi-Use Trail Extension Feasibility Study, which explores the technical possibility of extending the Mount Vernon Trail from the parking lot at Theodore Roosevelt Island to Interstate 495 at the American Legion Bridge. The National Park Service (NPS) embarked on this study in response to requests made in a 1998 Study performed by the Virginia Bicycle Federation and the Washington Area Bicycle Association.
The NPS will use the alternatives developed from this study to assess the environmental impacts related to the proposed alternative routes. Further analysis will be necessary as part of the National Environmental Policy Act planning process before any decisions can be made. This process will provide a framework to engage the state, county, and local communities in any concerns and issues they might have regarding the extension of the trail.
