ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS  | more info»
The George Washington Memorial Parkway offers educational programs for children at Arlington House, Great Falls Park, Theodore Roosevelt Island and Clara Barton NHS. Activities are provided through Junior Ranger Programs and curricullum based programs such as Parks As Classrooms. Please link to the inDepth page to find out about these activities offered to school groups and families.

Junior Ranger Program

A Junior Ranger is someone who works with National Park Service rangers to learn about natural and cultural resources in the park. Kids in grades 3-6 can become official Junior Rangers by participating in three of the George Washington Memorial Parkway's Junior Ranger Programs, volunteering to do a service project, and completing a nature journal.

The programs are free, although reservations are required. There is a limit of 15 children/session. The sessions are on Saturdays (with several repeating on Wednesdays during the summer), begin at 10:00 a.m. and will last between 2-3 hours.

This year's programs include collecting stream critters for study, learning how to use a map and compass, learning about pollution in the Potomac River, figuring out clues to "escape" from a prisoner-of-war camp, and many other fun and educational opportunities.
