Objectives
Students will:
1. Design a postcard based on one aspect of their trip to Roosevelt Island.
2. Describe the scene they have drawn using descriptive language.
3. Review postcard writing techniques and addressing a postcard.
Method
Students plan, design and draw a picture of their favorite part of the island. They will also review new concepts learned on the trip as they write these on the postcard for a friend, relative or fictional character.
Materials
4" x 6" index cards, preferable ruled on one side
Crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.
Photos or other pictures of Roosevelt Island, such as the National Park Service Roosevelt Island brochure
Examples of postcards from other places
Procedures
1. Have students brainstorm on a class chart new things they have learned on their trip to Roosevelt Island.
2. Discuss and review what the class explored and saw on the trip.
3. Have students share their journals or favorite experiences from the day they visited Roosevelt Island.
4. Give each student an index card and explain that they need to design a postcard of Roosevelt Island. They will want to draw a picture on the blank side of their favorite part of the island. On the back of the card, they will write a descriptive about their picture, similar to other postcards they have seen.
5. This is also a good time to review letter writing for postcards, explaining to students how to say a lot in a concise amount of space.
6. They will also write a letter on the postcard to someone of their choice describing their visit to Roosevelt Island.
Extension
Students who are particularly interested in drawing may want to develop a series of postcards depicting different aspects of Roosevelt Island.
Evaluation
Students can be evaluated on their use of descriptive language and their description of the trip.
