Celebrate America’s National Parks Event

April 22

   Announcing a special celebration brought about by the Presidentially Proclaimed National Park Week at George Washington Carver National Monument on Saturday, April 22, 2006.  Highlights of this event include a concert performance by the 399th U.S. Army Band and first person theatrical performances by Carver Scholar, Paxton Williams.  There will be many exhibits to view and activities to enjoy throughout the day.  The event includes:

 

v           A “Healthier America: March for  

            Parks Walk to take place at the

            park

 

v                      4th through 8th grade Science

            Fair exhibiting and judging

 

v                      Nature and Environmental Exhibits    

            including MISSOURI REPTILES

 

v                      CARVER Science Discovery Center

CARVER DAY CELEBRATION

JULY 15, 2006

The annual Carver Day Celebration has gospel music from various churches around the area to entertain the crowd and the music is sure to be the highlight of the event as it is every year!  There will also be exhibits including live fish and a variety of reptiles!

A commemoration program will feature special speakers under the big tent!  A portrayal of George Washington Carver will be performed by Carver scholar, Paxton Williams.

Many children’s activities were offered including a simulated archaeological dig, cemetery headstone rubbings, planting peanuts, and sketching on easels.

Agricultural School on Wheels

 

The Jesup Wagon, also known as the Agricultural School on Wheels, carried Carver’s bulletins along with many other useful supplies to the Southern farmers.  A park ranger will share the story of this amazing educational tool.

Wildflower Walk

 

A variety of beautiful blooms, native to Missouri, are on display in the prairie and woods.  A park ranger will lead a walk and assist visitors in identifying the flowers by their common names.

19th Century Laundry

 

Visit the 1881 Moses Carver House today to learn the method of washing laundry the way George did in the late 1800s.  Visitors will become acquainted with life in the 19th century while learning more about George Washington Carver.

Glimpse of the Past

 

The chores must be done on the Carver Farm before there is time to play!  This program at the 1881 Moses Carver House will invite children to wash laundry the old-fashioned way.  Then when the work is done an old-fashioned game or two will entertain everyone!

Expressions of the Soul

George Washington Carver was a very talented artist using flowering plants and landscapes as his favorite subjects to draw or paint.  This program takes a closer look at Carver the artist and how his artistry brought joy to his life.

Come celebrate the 90th birthday of the National Park Service.  The NPS was established on August 25, 1916.  A park ranger will conduct a presentation on the textured history of the organization.

Signatures of the Wild

 

As a young child, George Washington Carver explored the many wonders of nature on the Carver Farm.  Today, many animals enjoy a safe habitat at the park.  A display of mammal skins and an examination of various animal tracks familiarize us with our natural surroundings.
