Fire Danger at Gulf Islands
Fire danger is very high. Park neighbors should be careful when smoking, using fireworks or using out cooking grills and visitors should be careful when putting out cigarettes or cigars. Fireworks are not allowed within park boundaries.

West Ship Island Passenger Ferry Resumes Service
The passenger ferry service resumed operations to West Ship Island in the Mississippi District. There are no facilities or water on the island. Visitors must be prepared for the current conditons on the island including no facilities, water, shade but bathrooms are available on the boat.

Final Regulation for Personal Watercraft Use
Superintendent Jerry Eubanks announced today that the final regulation for Personal Watercraft (PWC) use at Gulf Islands National Seashore has been published in the Federal Register and is effective today, May 4, 2006.

Current Status of Florida District Areas after 2004/5 Hurricane Recovery
The Naval Live Oaks Area in Gulf Breeze, Fort Pickens Area, Fort Barrancas on board Pensacola Naval Air Station, Okaloosa Day Use Area, and most of the Perdido Key Area are opened to the public. Currently the Santa Rosa Day Use Area remains closed to vehicular traffic because of road damage.

Visitors who plan to bike or hike to historic Fort Pickens from the Seashore's entrance west of Pensacola Beach should be prepared for the 14 mile round-trip.

Cat Island Area within Current Boundary of National Seashore Reopens to Private Boaters
The two miles of the western tip of Cat Island that is part of Gulf Islands reopened to private boaters. Other areas that are privately owned are not open to the public.

Gulf Islands National Seashore blans to conduct controlled burns at the Naval Live Oaks Area will occur in March when weather conditions are favorable. Original burn scheduled for February 27, 206 was postponed because of adverse weather conditions.

Reopening of West Ship Island to Private Boaters
West Ship Island in the Mississippi District is now open for visitation by private boaters. There are no facilities so visitors must be prepared and Fort Massachusetts is still closed.

Fort Pickens Road Information
Without some form of protection the road will not survive a minimal storm. The National Seashore is working with the Federal Highway Administration, FL Department of Transportation, and other agencies to review engineering techniques that could provide some measure of protection for new road repairs.
