While most of Gulf Islands National Seashore is located miles offshore, the Mississippi District Headquarters is located in Ocean Springs, a town proud of its reputation as a historic and artistic community. The Chamber of Commerce office, located downtown in the Old Louisville & Nashville Train Depot, is home to a permanent art collection, displaying the work of some of Ocean Springs' artists and craftspeople. The old depot is also the starting point of the Live Oaks Bicycle Route that winds 15.5 miles through the streets of the town to the Davis Bayou area's boat ramp and back to the depot. Parking is available at both the Depot and the Davis Bayou Area. Local artist Walter Anderson, known for his water color illustrations of plants, animals and people of the Gulf Coast, made Ocean Springs his home. The Walter Anderson Museum of Art provides facilities for the exhibition, study and storage of his work. Shearwater Pottery displays the ceramic works of Walter Anderson's brother, Peter, and other family members. Today the studio is still operated by the Anderson family. For more information on Ocean Springs call the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce at 228-875-4424. |
