There are no designated hiking trails on West Ship Island but a hike around either the west-end or around the entire island is well worth the effort. There is a sandy beach to walk on around most of the island. Hikers have opportunities to see wildlife, a barrier island, historic Fort Massachusetts, swim and fish with a license. Boat transportation to West Ship Island is provided by a National Park Service concession, Pan Isles, Inc. Call 1-800-388-3290 (national) or 1-228-864-1014 (local) or visit the website at msshipisland.com. Boats depart from the Gulfport Yacht Harbor on U. S. Highway 90 in Gulfport, Mississippi from March through October, weather permitting. Boardwalks, a snack bar, picnic shelters, restrooms and bathhouses make the trip enjoyable. Hikers are encouraged to take plenty of drinking water, wear protective clothing and sunscreen with a high SPF to protect agains the high sun exposure, and wear a watch to be aware of the time. West Ship Island is a day-use island and the boat returns to Gulfport in the afternoon. Camping is not allowed on this island. Consider a trip to Ship as a chance to either explore a piece of our history or to enjoy the beauty of one the few remaining, natural Gulf coast barrier islands. |
