Live Oaks
This is both the Visitor Center and Administrative Headquarters for the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The Visitor Center contains exhibits on the history of live oak trees for use in building wooden naval ships and on the archeology of the area. There is an Eastern National bookstore which sells field guides, maps, postcards, posters, and interpretive books. A twelve minute orientation film about the park is available in the auditorium upon request. The visitor center is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and closed Christmas day. Information is available on sites in both the Florida and Mississippi Districts of the Seashore. The Naval Live Oaks Area also contains a picnic area with a pavilion, individual tables, restrooms and outdoor showers, a youth group camping facility, and several hiking trails, including the Visitor Center Trail and Pensacola-St. Augustine Road. There are many ways to enjoy the features of this 1,378 acre woodland area. Fort Pickens The Visitor Center features the Eastern National Bookstore which carries books, videos, patches, flags, posters and children's books. Visitors can take a self guided tour of Fort Pickens, or the join a ranger on an hour tour beginning at the visitor center daily at 2:00 p.m. There is also a museum and auditorium located in the Fort Pickens area. The museum is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from November to February and 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from March to October. Regularly scheduled interpretive programs are available in the auditorium. Fort Barrancas This Visitor Center has exhibits on the history of Pensacola under five flags from 1559-1971 and displays Civil War and coast artillery artifacts. A 12-minute video Fort Barrancas is shown upon request. The Eastern National Outlet carries books, educational materials, and theme-related non-book items.
