Mississippi Camping

Davis Bayou
The Davis Bayou Campground is closed indefinitely due to hurricane damage.

Primitive Camping is available on Horn, Petit Bois and East Ship Islands, accessible by boat. Gulf Islands National Seashore protects three of the last undeveloped barrier islands to be found on the coast of the Atlantic ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Existence is tough in this world of intense heat, high humidity, and near desert-like conditions. Campers and visitors will explore a world where land meets sea and life balances on the edge. If entering the island on a privately owned boat, a 20-foot or longer craft is recommended. Inland water boats such as bass boats and pontoon party barges are not suitable for travel 10-12 miles from shore. To inquire about transportation out to the islands, please call (228) 875-9057.

Florida: Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Ivan, the Fort Pickens campground is currently closed as are the Florida pavilions with the exception of Naval Live Oaks.

Primitive camping is allowed on the eastern end of Perdido Key, beginning a half mile east of the end of Johnson Beach Road. You are asked to avoid the dunes and vegetated areas, and you must pack out what you pack in. Fires are allowed on the beach below the extreme high tide. Most campers arrive by small boat (land on the northern side of the island). For information about primitive camping and required permits call (850) 492-0912 or (850) 492-7278.
