Lemon scurfpea has long roots that help it draw from the limited moisture
found deep within the sand, while the roots also help to anchor the plant
in the ever-shifting sand. As a member of the pea family, its roots contain
nodules of nitrogen-fixing bacteria which help to create fertilize so
the plant-bacteria team can be one of the first to colonize the nutrient-poor
sands of the dunes.
