Sangre de Cristo Mountains

Almost 20 million years ago, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains
began their precipitous uplift
into the Colorado sky. With peaks over 14,000 feet, they collect moisture
which feeds the sand sheet and dune system with surface and subsurface
water.
