Sand Creek

Sand Creek

Just beyond the northwestern extent of Great Sand Dunes, Sand Creek flows into the San Luis Valley carrying moisture and sediment from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. When it delivers water far into the sand sheet during spring snowmelt—in April, May and sometimes June—the creek plays an important role in feeding the sand sheet with sand that will subsequently be transported by the wind into the Sand Creek Star Dunes.
