Although the sand sheet is a desert above, it is a river below. Where
the water table meets the air, a number of hydological features appear:
springs, marshes, creeks and interdunal ponds. These features are essential
for the survival of species that depend on abundant water, such as slender
spiderflower, Rocky Mountain elk and tiger salamanders
to name a few.
