Numerous species of darkling beetles are found at Great Sand Dunes, but
the endemic circus beetle can be distinguished from others by tiny hairs
that cover its outer wings. If this tiny scavenging beetle is threatened,
it will lift the rear of its abdomen and excrete a foul smelling liquid
to ward away predators.
