Noel: Well, anyhow, Aunt Tillie had goneMrs. Herard was ill, and Aunt Tillie used to go. . . went up there to stay for a week to help her out. The family. . . the story in the familynow, it's a family storyis that one day, one night, one of those warm summer evenings, you know. . .
BH: Ah huh.
Noel: It's nice and balmy out. . . they left the door open. And in wanders a skunk. So. . . Mr. Herard decides, you know, Aunt Tillie and Mrs. Herard takes their brooms and they try to gently, you know, get it out of there. Well, that didn't work, because every time they'd get the brooms outthe skunk would head for someunder the cabinets, and the kitchen utensils and things. So Ulus got really tired of that, and pulled out his. . . he pulled out his ah. . . his six-shooter, and he let go a couple shots at that. Well, first shot missed the skunk. The second shot blew out the kerosene lamps. . . and everybody left but the skunk decided it was time to shoot back. So they got really involved in that.
BH: Oh, that's a great story.
Noel: Yeah, he was a. . . he was a. . . and then ah. . . Ulus. . . Now, it's a record that he was a very generous fellow. And you know, that he was supposed. . . he was supposed. . . you could use Ulus's cabin, and his house, but you had to cut the wood and do the things. Well, he expected other people to be the same way. So when he would go up to Crestone, he'd go up to the folks' house, go right in the house, make himself at home. So mom said one time, they werethey'd just got home, and there in the living roomthere's old Herard, sleeping away on the couch. And they tried to wake him up. Of course, you know, he had this horn, you knowthey couldn't get him up. But he'd just come and make himself at home, and he went to sleep on. . . when evening come he went and laid down on the couch, was snoozing at eight o'clock. Well, he's waiting for 'emcourse when they came in, he didn't hear 'em. But. . . he was that kind of guy. But what happened, my folks. . . my folks came off around the Gardner-Walsenburg area?
