BH: Okay. Did you ever go to any dances, different places around?
Budge: Well, how far back do you want to go?
BH: (laughs) As far back as you can remember.
Budge: I can remember we had these dances at the Zapata Ranch, and ah. . . people would come for a good many miles with a team and wagon.
BH: Ah huh.
Budge: And they'd just put a bunch of hay in the bottom of the wagon box, and makes a bed for the kids. They'd go right to the Zapata Ranch, and they used to go up to the Urraca Schoolhouse dancing. And they used to be some people over by Alamosa that had a big house by the name of Upton(?)he was a rancher.
BH: Um hum.
Budge: They had dances there, but folks would take us kids, and when we got tired, they'd just put us to bed. But when they went to one of them dances, they went to stay all nightthey danced all night.
. . .
BH: So where would they have those dances, that your folks went to?
Budge: Oh, they just moved the kitchen table out, and they might be dancing in the kitchen, and one in the living room. Square dancing, mostly.
BH: I'm surprised they had enough room.
Budge: Well, I tell youthey'd make room.
BH: And who provided the music?
Budge: Well, usually Coley King and his brother, Will. And some of the Dentons made music. Coley King played the violin and played the banjo, too. And Will King played the guitar. My mother played some. Whenever they had dances at our place, why Mom played the piano. She played by ear. Couldn't read a note.
BH: Huh!
Budge: But she could hear a song, and sit down at the piano and play it.
BH: Wow!
Budge: I had a brother that was the same way.
BH: That's. . . that's quite a gift. When you say dances at your place, did you mean up at Scruggsville, or. . . ?
Budge: No, up at the. . . they had a. . . they had a home up there by the King place.
BH: Oh, okay.
Budge: They had a log house there. Fact, my brother and his wife, and my brother-in-law, and ah. . . Thelma, and her husband, Georgewas living there. They had a couple of dances there then. And they'd just move everything, and set everything outside. And they danced in the living room. That was in. . . golly. . .
Goldie: We danced at the little schoolhouse.
Budge: Huh?
Goldie: We went dancing at the schoolhouse.
Budge: Yeah, we went dancing at Urraca Schoolhouse, when that was there.
BH: Ah huh.
Goldie: It wasn't that big.
Budge: Not very big.
Goldie: But we had a good time.
