Transverse dunes
The dune ridges shown in this photograph are transverse dunes that are located on the south-southeast side of Great Sand Dune's main dunefield. These ridges are formed from a general wind pattern that flows from the south-southwest (right to left). When barchan dunes join together they form barchanoid ridges and if the ridges become straight enough, they line up into transverse dunes. (diagram)
