A possible hearth site is found in the earth near the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
The soil is black because it contains bits of carbon from an ancient fire. Although
forest fires burn through areas and leave fire-charred remains, archaeologists
with keen abilities can determine whether this carbon was from a forest fire
or from a hearth fire where people cooked their meals long, long ago. Fire-cracked
rocks and burned animal bones are sometimes strong evidence of a hearth site.
Archaeologists surveyed this site in the summer of 2004 to look for further
evidence.
