Objective: A one meter grid has been placed over some fire-blackened
earth. You suspect that this area may have been used as a hearth (fire pit)
by ancient people. Your goal is to organize artifacts found by their relative
ages. Click on a unit of earth to begin searching.
This Digging Back in Time activity above has four sections.
Main Digging Area: The potential hearth site is sectioned off for
you into a one-by-one meter grid. Squares of earth may be removed by clicking
on the units of earth. These squares are then filtered through the sifter.
The darker the square is, the more charcoal the square of earth contains.
Sifter: The sifter allows the units of earth to be filtered. If an
artifact is found, it appears next to the sifter. An artifact will only appear
next to the sifter the first time it is found. You may set the sifter speed
by clicking the up and down arrows. Once an artifact is found, you may drag
it to the Relative Age area and arrange it in chronological order.
Relative Age: Located below the main digging area, the age sequencer
allows you to chronologically order your artifacts. When all the artifacts
are ordered correctly from youngest to oldest, a clue will be made available.
Main Text Box: When items are found, they are described in the lower
text box. When artifacts are dragged, the description is redisplayed.
