Site.

8-10, 2005
Location: Deer Lodge
Renewal Units: 23

Grant-Kohrs Ranch began an educational outreach program in August 2002.
The educational partnership was launched in 2002 by Grant-Kohrs Ranch
NHS, local school groups, the University of Montana, and museum management
in Washington D.C. to develop curriculum-based education products, including
lesson plans, traveling trunks, on-site educational activities, an annual
teachers workshop, and an outreach prototype for teaching with museum
objects.
Grant-Kohrs has developed the following strategic plan for producing
as educational outreach program:
· Stage I; GRKO sponsored 2 workshops to develop the necessary
curriculum based lesson plans on 4th and 8th grade level lesson plans
for the first stage (pre-visit) of the educational outreach program.
· Stage II; Sponsor a workshop to develop on-site educational
programs.
· Stage III; Sponsor a workshop to develop post visit activities.
· Stage IIII; Develop educational materials to supplement lesson
plans (ie. Curriculum based trunks, website activities, museum object
learning activities)
The final product will be a curriculum based program in the form of
pre-visit activities, on-site or off-site ranger instructed programs,
and/or with traveling trunks, and post-visit tests and activities on
and off-line. The materials will not be developed specifically to state
and park significance; rather they have national importance as they
teach about the open range cattle era in the United States.
With the support
of the NPS Parks as Classrooms initiative, Grant-Kohrs Ranch NHS will
host a 3 day workshop for K-8th grade teachers from August 8 to August
10, 2005 in Deer Lodge. The workshop will provide teachers with an advanced
understanding of Montana and western U.S. ranching heritage, while developing
curricular-relevant products that support the educational outreach of
this unique national park.
The first day will
consist of presentations on ranching heritage, with in-depth exposure
to the incomparable historic structures, artifacts, and records of Grant-Kohrs
Ranch. The remaining time will be devoted to preparing and finalizing
supplemental educational materials based on state curricular standards.
These products will be used as part of a comprehensive educational program
for school groups. The lesson plans will be then be disseminated for
state and national access on the park website, www.nps.gov/grko/home.htm.
Participants will
earn twenty renewal units through the Office of Public Instruction.
Grant-Kohrs Ranch NHS will provide lodging for participants attending
from beyond the immediate commuting area.
