Visiting
Grant-Kohrs Ranch
National Historic Site
Grant-Kohrs Ranch NHS is at the north end of Deer Lodge off U.S. Interstate 90. Deer Lodge is 40 miles north of Butte and 80 miles southeast of Missoula, Montana. To get to the ranch, take either Deer Lodge exit and follow the signs.

The ranch is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years holidays. Hours are 8 to 5:30 May to September, and 9 to 4:30 the rest of the year.

There is no admission to the park. However, visitors can purchase Golden Age, Golden Access and National Park Passes at the visitor center.

The site has handicapped parking in the visitor center parking area, and vehicular access to the ranch for the mobility impaired (inquire on arrival at the visitor center). Restrooms are available near the visitor center and at the ranch.

Picnicing facilities are located at the nearby city park. Due to livestock and fire concerns, neither smoking nor pets are permitted beyond the visitor center parking area. To best appreciate the ranch, allow for a minimum hour and a half visit.

Exploring the Ranch Begin at the visitor center. Here you can pay park admission, obtain a brochure with self-guiding map, and sign up for a free ranger-led tour of the sumptuous 1890s Kohrs family residence.

Next, proceed down the paved trail. Walking along the jack leg fence, you may see cattle and horses grazing. As you pass under a railroad overpass, the ranch and its mountain backdrop of the Flint Creek range open before you. The sheltered Deer Lodge Valley and its abundant grass attracted pioneer stockgrowers John Grant and Conrad Kohrs in the 1800s.

Nearing the ranch complex you will notice a variety of structures--log, board and batten, and frame. Look closer, and you'll see these buildings were built and adapted for different purposes over time. Continuously operating since 1860, ranch architecture and landscape reflect the West's livestock industry as its operations evolved from frontier days to modern times.

Open doors invite a visit. As summer staffing permits, you may encounter costumed park rangers at the bunkhouse, blacksmith shop, and chuckwagon interpreting daily life during different periods in the ranch's history.

For Your Safety

For public education and to maintain the cultural landscape, horses, poultry, and cattle continue to be raised at Grant-Kohrs Ranch. While domesticated, all these animals can hurt people who are unaware or heedless. Please keep yourself and your children a safe distance from the animals, and do not enter livestock pens.

Please watch your step on uneven and gravel surfaces, refrain from climbing on farm machinery, and respect barriers in ranch buildings.
