The steady hum of the male cicada, an insect more often heard than seen, fills the late summer night air. If you live in other parts of the nation or surrounded by the sounds of the city, you can't hear the cicada. But when you come to Greenbelt Park for that quick getaway, or your kids' first camping trip, or any other reason, that steady hum welcomes you and lulls you to sleep as it has inhabitants of this place for hundreds of years. Like the cicada, people have been attracted to this place. But why?
This land has been used at different times for different purposes. The interaction of humans and their physical environment and the ever-evolving results of this interaction are being played out before us.
