Stakeholder Groups and Public Workshops
June 2003
On June 24 and 25, 2003, the Mary Orton Company, LLC, under contract to Grand Canyon National Park, conducted two focused stakeholder workshops and an evening public workshop as part of the process to revise the Colorado River Management Plan (CRMP).
The goal of the workshops was to clarify areas of agreement and disagreement among stakeholders and the public on what the Park should include in a full range of reasonable alternatives in the CRMP Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), concerning two issues:
- Allocation of recreational use; and
- Motor use on the river
All workshops were held at the Embassy Suites Hotel, Phoenix-North, located at 2577 W. Greenway Road, Phoenix, Arizona.
- Two stakeholder workshops were held:
- Tuesday, June 24, 2003 : 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm
Wednesday, June 25, 2003 : 8:00 am to 1:00 pm
Participants for the stakeholder workshops were pre-selected by leadership in the various stakeholder groups and were by invitation only, although the public was encouraged to observe the proceedings and provide written comments.
A public workshop to collect input on the same two issues was held Tuesday, June 24, 2003 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Everyone was invited to attend and participate.
These workshops did not re-open the public scoping period, which ended November 1, 2002, but assisted the CRMP planning team in developing its draft EIS.
