National Park Service to Hold Public Information Meeting on the Colorado River Management Plan

As part of the continuing public involvement process for the Colorado River Management Plan (CRMP), the National Park Service (NPS) will be holding a Public Information Meeting on May 16 in Flagstaff, AZ. The meeting will be held at the Flagstaff High School auditorium at 1:30 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide information on how the Park will proceed in the next phase of the planning process. The Planning Team will present the issues identified through the public scoping process, and describe the strategy for addressing the major issues.

In addition to the public meeting, the information presented by the NPS will be posted on a website developed specifically for the CRMP process. The information presented at the meeting will be posted concurrently with the meeting time on May 16 at www.nps.gov/grca/crmp/. In addition to the Soundings (a newsletter developed for the Colorado River Management Planning Process), the website will serve as an official forum for communication during the planning process.

The NPS initiated the process for updating the CRMP in September 1997 with public scoping workshops and a written comment period. The next step in the planning process is to develop alternatives to current management actions identified as areas of concern by the agency and the public. The NPS is currently managing recreational use of the Colorado River through Grand Canyon under a plan that was approved in 1989. The completion of the revised CRMP is scheduled for the spring of 2000.
