Volunteers
who come to work at
Golden Spike N.H.S. are given a unique opportunity
to make a difference for the National Park Service.
We have a wide diversity of duties that allow
volunteers to contribute their expertise in a
variety of ways.
Volunteers In Parks or "VIPs", are a diverse
group of men and women including teachers,
students, mechanics, professionals and retired
citizens seeking experience working in the national
parks. Despite their varied backgrounds, VIPs all
share a common goal to preserve and protect our
national heritage and resources. They are also
playing an ever increasing role at Golden Spike NHS
and the rest of the national park system.
Organizational
Highlights:
Golden Spike NHS commemorates the completion of the
first Transcontinental Railroad across the United
States. The park recreates the May 10th, 1869
celebration with an exciting reenactment; this is
augmented with two fully-functional, steam powered
locomotives that provide a dramatic backdrop.

volunteer reenactment cast poses with the

Program
Specifics:
We are looking for volunteers who would like to
assist with historical interpretation and/or
locomotive operations. Volunteers help with visitor
center operations, bookstore management, historic
interpretation and special events. We are also
looking for volunteers who would like to work on
the park's steam powered locomotives during the
winter and summer months. Volunteers enjoy hands-on
experience working with the park's experts while
they maintain, repair, inspect, polish and operate
the 19th century replica locomotives.
Other
Volunteer Opportunities:
Another example of the diversity of volunteer work
at Golden Spike includes the weekly reenactment of
the "Driving of the Golden Spike" ceremony, wherein
the event is recreated for the public to witness.
Providing entertaining and educational experiences
that often are the highlight of the visiting
public's vacation is a daily routine for many of
our volunteers.
The following is just a brief list of different
work that volunteers have performed for Golden
Spike in recent years;
Greeting park visitors at the information desk
