The Route Across the West

 

This map outlines the route of the transcontinental railroad through the West. It passed over at least six mountain ranges, spanned countless rivers, crossed six states, and established several cities.

The route went from Sacramento, California to Omaha, Nebraska, a distance of 1,776 miles. At Omaha it connected with eastern lines, and in Sacramento the road was quickly linked with rails to San Francisco allowing travel from Atlantic to Pacific.
