When David Hewes had the golden spike cast in 1869, an extra portion of gold known as a sprue was attatched to the pointed end of the spike. The sprue was removed and made into momentos of the important occasion. From the sprue a total of seven tiny spikes were made to be used as watch charms. Four rings were also made from the sprue. |
The spike seen here is one of the original momento spikes. It was presented to Mr. Tilden G. Abbott, a nephew of David Hewes. This tiny spike has been presented to the National Park Service for permanent display at Golden Spike National Historic Site. |
