Miniature Golden Spike

When David Hewes had the golden spike cast in 1869, an extra portion of gold known as a sprue was attatched to the pointed end of the spike. The sprue was removed and made into momentos of the important occasion. From the sprue a total of seven tiny spikes were made to be used as watch charms. Four rings were also made from the sprue.

The spike seen here is one of the original momento spikes. It was presented to Mr. Tilden G. Abbott, a nephew of David Hewes. This tiny spike has been presented to the National Park Service for permanent display at Golden Spike National Historic Site.
