A Celestial Honor

In nineteenth century America people from China were often referred to as Celestials. Because of manpower shortages, the Central Pacific, building across the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, experimented with Chinese workers. So great was the success that by the time the railroad was completed at Promontory, Utah Territory in 1869, an estimated ten to twelve thousand Celestials were employed by the Central Pacific.

In 1969, when the 100th anniversary of the completion of the railroad was celebrated at Promontory, a highlight of the event was the unveiling of this commemorative plaque. This plaque was donated by the San Francisco Chinese community and placed by the Chinese Historical Society of America. It is currently mounted on a granite stone between the Golden Spike visitor center and the historic last spike site.
