Western National Parks Association was founded in 1938 to aid and promote the educational and scientific activities of the National Park Service. As a nonprofit organization authorized by Congress, it makes interpretive material available to park visitors by sale or free distribution. All net proceeds support the interpretive and research programs of the National Park Service. WNPA is one of over 60 cooperating associations working closely with the National Park Service and is currently operatiing in 52 national parks in the west.

Examples of WNPA-funded projects are the historical flags and period clothing used at Golden Spike, the park's newspaper, publication of the book Rebirth of the Jupiter and the 119, and production of the video Tales of the Rails: The Building of the Transcontinental Railway.
