The Moose fire started August 14, 2001 with a lightning strike near Whitefish Divide, north of Kalispell, Montana.  The fire perimeter now covers over 69,000 acres on the Flathead National Forest, Glacier National Park, and state and private land.

No major structures have been lost.  At the height of fire activity, over 1000 firefighters were working out of the base camp in Columbia Falls, Montana

Suppression costs to date are over $17,000,000



Several school groups are touring fire camp and making trips to the fire to learn first-hand about fighting wildfires.


Within the fire perimeter, the burn pattern varies from areas that were completely consumed to areas untouched by the fire.  Looking into Glacier National Park from the west. (9/27/01)
