This section will include frequently asked questions received from the Citizen's Advisory Committee (CAC) as well as from the Public Input section of this website.

Who selected the Citizen's Advisory Committee?
The CAC was appointed by the Secretary of the Interior, Bruce Babbitt, in February 2000.

What are the alternatives to rehabilitate the Going-to-the-Sun Road?
Alternatives are currently being developed. A draft report that presents and analyzes alternatives will be presented to the Citizen Advisory Committee in May, 2001."

Why is a study needed to reconstruct the Going-to-the-Sun Road?
Reconstructing or rehabilitating the Road will require a substantial amount of construction activity. Without adequate study of construction techniques and mitigation options, the impacts to tourists, businesses, and natural resources could be substantial. This study will identify options that not only minimize these impacts but provide opportunities that could enhance visitor experience, improve business, and retain natural resources.

What will happen if nothing is done?
The Going-to-the-Sun Road will continue to deteriorate providing more opportunities for catastrophic failure. Current roadway funds are not adequate to improve the Road or to maintain the roadway in its current condition.

When will the Road be reconstructed?
This study will help determine a schedule. Although roadway improvements are occurring during the summer of 2000, they are spot improvements and only address specific problems. Before major improvements would be done, environmental clearance is required. This clearance process could be completed by the end of 2002. Design and construction could begin after that.
